Plain Facts
It's like the weather - everyone talks about it, but nobody seems to know how it happens or who controls it.
Retail prices which seem to change within hours and fierce competition between the distributors of petrol only add to to the confusion at the petrol pump.
This page aims to demystify fuel pricing, at the same time putting Brisbane area prices into proper perspective. The aim is to at least to provide the motorist with knowledge about how prices are established in the first place. With this knowledge, you can make judgements for yourself about which product or company you wish to support.
To begin, here are some facts which may surprise, or shock you.
- Petrol prices in Brisbane are among the lowest in the world.
- Queensland Petrol prices are about 9 cents per litre cheaper than those in other states. (due to the State subsidy)
- Motorists may complain about the weekly variation in petrol pump prices but it is this very fluctuation that provide competition which in turn keeps the price of petrol down.
- Australia now imports over 25% of its refined petroleum products.
- Imports by agressively competitive independents (like Neumann petroleum) help to keep the price of Australian refined petrol in line with imported petrol from Asia.
- Australa has no independent refiners, relatively few independent importers and a small independent retailers.
- These independents stimulate competition which provides low cost petrol to motorists - in other words, it keeps the big boys honest.
- Price discounting runs in cycles, and it would pay motorists handsomely to be able to forecast these cycles and by petrol at the right time in the cycle.
- Motorists should not expect petrol prices to stay low indefinitely. There will come a time when Australian petrol prices will increase more in line with world prices.
The reason is aggressive local competition and Government policy which requires Australian petrol prices to quickly respond to movements in Asian petrol prices. Queensland petrol prices are about 9 cents per litre cheaper than those in other states, thanks to the Queensland Government's fuel subsidy scheme.TIP: Motorists need to learn to fill up early each week before the late week price rise.
The building blocks of petrol pricing may help explain more clearly why local motorists enjoy low petrol prices. .
